I traveled to India sometime back and I learned many things. One of the most fascinating things that I learned in Chennai is that organic honey has been used in the ayurvedic medicine system for thousands of years. Filled with wonder, I went on to find out what was so special about organic India honey. I found out many things.
Organic honey is continuously gaining popularity in the market today probably because of its superior health benefits. Most people however ask themselves if there is any difference between the regular honey and organic honey. Certainly, there are a number of differences between organic honey ranging from how the bees are kept, the nectar they are fed on the processing and pricing and so on.
Have you previously been confused when buying honey from the stores since the honey labeled as organic is expensive that its regular counterparts and you end up wondering what is so special about the so-called organic honey.
Here are some of the reasons why the organic honey is regarded as special:
Chemical free honey
Organic honey has to be tested and proven to not contain any chemicals such as pesticides, antibiotics or any other environmental pollutant. The honey is usually subject to rigorous tests by the certification bodies to ensure that it meets this criterion. The bees that make organic honey are supposed to only feed on organic windflowers that are not sprayed with pesticides, herbicides or fed with on any chemical fertilizer.
The farming process of India honey
The farming of organic honey is different from the farming of the regular honey. This is because the certification bodies ensure that it meets the standards required by extensively monitoring the farming process.
The flowers, from which the bees get nectar from, must be grown in an organic farm where they are treated neither with pesticides nor with herbicides. In addition, no chemical fertilizers should be added in the soil.
Since bees travel for kilometers to look for nectar, the organic beehives must be placed near clean water and they should be within a radius of five kilometers in an organic farm. The bee hives, honey samples and the farming practices must be tested and analyzed regularly to ensure that there is no contamination whatsoever by any chemicals.
Certification of India honey
In addition to the organic honey being different from the regular honey in terms of even packaging, it is also certified. It is therefore very important to look out for the organic certification label in case you are looking for the organic honey.
For honey to be certified as organic, the certification body must be satisfied that it meets the organic farming standards, the extraction, processing and packaging standards laid out by the body.
The mode of harvesting honey
Organic honey must be obtained by any of these methods; straining, extraction or settling. This is to ensure that the honey remains as it existed in the beehives. In addition, it should not be heated beyond pasteurization, which is about 95 degrees. Some people harvest it at night using flashlights, some during the day. It does not matter.
The taste of honey
The consumers who have tasted the organic honey say that it has a superior taste when compared to the regular honey. This is probably because it is more natural and healthier than the regular honey.
Contains Propolis – benefits of honey
Organic honey contains propolis, which is the substance that is used by bees to protect their beehives from bacteria and viruses infections. This substance contains essential antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties.
Large amounts of antioxidants
Organic honey contains antioxidants known phenolic compounds. These antioxidants are very essential in protecting our bodies from cell damage because of free radicals. The free radicals make our bodies age faster, they also can cause chronic diseases, and the phenolic compounds in organic honey protect against such.
There … I really enjoyed that lesson and since I could not take some back home with me, I filled my portable coffee mug with warm water, lemon and honey to drink on my trips to some of the local temples. It soothed my throat and felt really good. It is little wonder that India honey is one of the best in the world market.
